On April 1st, 2015, Smart Power India was established by The Rockefeller Foundation to manifest their vision of a progressive and sustainable power sector and enabling the lives of multitudes of communities through the power of reliable energy access. This month, we complete 6 years of advocating for issues affecting the power sector such as improving customer experience, leading in-depth innovative technology led solutions, and highlighting socio-economic factors that drive outcomes in the energy access ecosystem, such as the role of women in productive use of power and derivative results of reliable electricity in healthcare, sustainability and climate action.

Here is a montage of key conversations we have raised over the years!

#Budget2021

The 2021 Union budget presented by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, was a much anticipated event for the energy sector. We highlighted major trends and expectations from this year’s allocation for the power sector and discussed key focus areas for an effective way forward, and drove expert commentary around its implications.

#ShePowers

The global conversation on ending energy poverty has consistently recognized gender equality as an inevitable aspect of our transition to more sustainable outcomes for the energy sector. On International Day for Women, SPI decided to resonate this belief by raising conversations around key aspects of gender and energy access and how we envision the future of the power sector in our campaign #ShePowers, where we shared stories of women’s role as catalysts in the future of energy access as consumers, drivers of economic progress as well as members of the energy service industry.

Webinar on ‘Women as Catalysts in the Future of Energy Access’

#ShePowers led us to gather a panel of experts to discuss key themes surrounding manifestation of gender outcomes in energy access. We focused on looking at energy access from a gender-lens, women’s position in the energy value chain, and their role in achieving SDG7. We also discussed the impact of COVID and changing scenarios for access especially for women and how we can drive economic and social empowerment of women through equitable energy access.
